It’s said ‘One never travels places; one only travels good times’…How true! Because in travel there are no fixed plans - you read something, you flip through a few pages, ponder over a couple of snaps and think how it would be to be there…or perhaps you might click through several links, just as you did to get in here. So, when it comes to travel, it’s natural to act on impulse and we congratulate you for it just gets worthy with J N Rao Travel Consultancy Services Pvt. Ltd..
We bring you this month a desert safari at the Wild Ass sanctuary in Kutch and a soothing journey at the Modhera Sun temple.
The Wild Ass Sanctuary, Dasada, Kutch
Amongst the largest wild life sanctuaries in India, the Wild Ass sanctuary of Dasada remains quite unusual. Set across 4950 sq. km., the expanse is the only habitat for the endangered Asiatic Wild Ass, locally known as ‘Ghud khar’. Being a member of horse family Wild Ass are tall, chestnut brown and white in colour, and are exceptionally fast. Several other exotic creatures include panther, Black buck, Chinkaras, Blue bull, Jackals, wild boar, a team of rare birds including Houbara Bustard, Falcons and Larks. Traveling on the vast Rann in an open jeep is a refreshing and exciting experience. The sunrise and sunset are breathtaking, displaying exotic hues. Viewing wildlife is an exciting and thrilling adventure.
However, it doesn’t end here, there’s more to make this marshland a uniquely barren place. The feeling of getting one on one with the horizons that prank mirage, agile winds thumping dust waves over the silent salt plains, it appears like a captivating middle-of-nowhere with awe-inspiring vacuum !
If you forget to take your cameras, it’s going be a leisure blunder !
Excursions for viewing a typical Saurashtra village, handloom weaving and dyeing units and the village potter are available.
Modhera Sun Temple
Built by Raja Bhimdev I of Solanki ancestry in AD 1026, the shrine is dedicated to Surya – the Sun. It is so positioned that at equinoxes, first rays of the sun fall first on the images in the shrine. The temple continues to reveal the architectural genius despite having endured several centuries.
The Sun Temple at Modhera has been divided into three main compartments. The first is the Surya Kund, a fascinating massive rectangular stepped tank. Devotees on their way to offer prayers to the Sun God would be required to first stop here for ceremonial rituals and only then proceed for worship towards the temple. Some 108 small, miniature shrines dot the steps around the Kund.
Several small steps from the Kund lead up to the enchanting Sabha Mandap commonly described as "a magnificent style of pillared splendor" for it is supported by 52 intricately carved pillars depicting instances from epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Based on a lotus-base plinth, the façade of this structure is visually engaging – wall paintings of gods and goddesses, human life cycle and some erotic scenes from the Kama Sutra. One cannot but be charmed by the artistry and skill of the artisans of the time.
Modhera Sun Temple is amongst the immortals signs of Indian ethnic history. Come and revere the divine journey in rapture.
